Close to 60% of Hungarians are almost certain to spend a few days in a domestic holiday destination this year, while 47% will definitely not cross the border in the summer months, according to a representative survey by the insurance firm Generali that sent the results to the state news agency MTI on Tuesday.
The survey, which was conducted at the end of March and beginning of April this year and involved 1,000 people, looked at what the population is planning to do during this year's holiday season.
According to the results, only a fifth of Hungarians plan to visit destinations abroad and in Hungary during the holiday period.
Generali says this shows that most people are not taking the risk of major trips in the shadow of the recurring coronavirus infection and war.
They also pointed out that those planning a holiday abroad were significantly over-represented among those living in Budapest and larger cities and those with higher education, suggesting that financial means play a decisive role in the choice of destinations.
Among the age groups, young people under 30 are the most avid travelers, followed by those in their 50s and 60s.
Age is also a significant factor in the choice of holiday destination, with older people preferring quieter spas and wellness facilities, while younger people are looking for places with a lively culinary scene, such as wine regions, and the 30-39 age group for a child-friendly environment.
Overall, Lake Balaton remains the most popular tourist destination in Hungary, with 36% of Hungarians immediately thinking of the Hungarian sea when they have to choose a holiday destination. At the same time, 15% of those surveyed said that no matter where they go this holiday season, the only consideration is the affordability.
