In July, the number of used cars imported from abroad exceeded 12,000. Mostly older cars come from the west.
In July this year, according to DataHouse, 12,196 imported passenger cars were put on the domestic market, an increase of 13% compared to the previous month and 61% compared to the low in April. With this, the volume of used car imports is only 6-7% lower than before the outbreak of the current epidemic.
"The shift in focus to used cars also means that a turnaround in the average age of the Hungarian car fleet is not expected this year either," explains Bertalan Halász, CEO of JóAutók.hu ('Good Cars'). It can also be expected that the share of older vehicles will continue to grow in domestic traffic, even though last year the vehicle fleet averaged 14.4 years. The trend of continuous aging since 2007, starting at 10.3 years, will not stop now.
The volume of used car imports in the first seven months of this year totaled 77,280 units, 17% less than the 92,721 quantities registered in the same period last year. During the same period, the number of new car sales was 67,725, down 25% from 89,833 a year earlier.
