Ten new CNG (gas-fueled) buses with Euro 6 environmental classification have been put into service by Volánbusz in the southeastern Hungarian city of Szeged, according to an announcement this Thursday.
The almost HUF one billion investment saw the arrival of low-floor vehicles with visual and audio passenger information systems, suitable for wheelchairs and prams. The buses are also equipped with boarding ramps, Wi-Fi and USB ports.
Deputy mayor Sándor Nagy explained that the gas-fueled buses have lower emissions of certain pollutants than diesel buses, so they are less harmful to the environment.
He stressed that Szeged defines itself as a ‘green city’, so the city's goal is to make Szeged "as green as possible" in transport. Therefore, it is important to have modern buses running in the city that are less polluting, he added.
The deputy mayor said that Volánbusz is a "good contractual partner for the city" and provides the fleet of vehicles in the municipality with the right quality.
Tamás Németh, deputy general manager of the bus operator firm Volánbusz Plc., said that in the framework of the vehicle modernization program launched in 2018, Volánbusz was able to replace around 2,000 of its fleet of 5,900 vehicles.
He added that it is important for the company to renew its fleet with alternative-powered buses that belong to the ‘clean’ vehicle category, such as the 164 CNG-powered buses, ten of which have just arrived in Szeged.
