The coronavirus pandemic had the biggest impact on passenger traffic in April, the May figures reflect a slow increase in traffic. Budapest's Ferenc Liszt International Airport handled just 9,870 passengers in April, and more than double that number, 22,813 in May. This is a drop of 98.4% compared to the 1,411,593 passengers registered last May.
As for cargo, Ferenc Liszt International Airport handled 10,480 tons of goods and 634, a record number of dedicated cargo flights in May 2020. Also, following the slow increase in May, several airlines announced the gradual restart of flights to and from Budapest in June and July.
To safeguard passengers’ health and increase service quality, the airport operator has installed another 16 self-service bag tag printing machines, located in the check-in hall at Terminal 2B, opposite the check-in counters. Budapest Airport asks departing passengers to use the self-service baggage drop-off system whenever it is available for their flights, to minimize physical contact.
The system enables passengers to scan the bar code found on their (printed or electronic) boarding pass, and to print and place the bag tag on their hold baggage themselves. Then, at the automated, self-service counters located opposite the bag tag printers, they can check in their hold baggage easily, by scanning the bag tag. The advantage of the self-service system is that hold baggage can be checked in conveniently, quickly and without physical contact with people.
