The launch of a regular flight between Budapest and Toronto is a sign that "transport relations between Hungary and North America have reached a new level," Parliamentary State Secretary at the Hungarian Ministry of Transport and Investment, Zsolt Tárkányi said in Budapest on Saturday, MTI reports.
Speaking at a press conference after the arrival of the flight at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport, the state secretary pointed out that the two cities will be linked by four Air Canada flights a week in June and five in July and August. Flights will be available until October 24, he added.
Zsolt Tárkányi remarked that American Airlines launched a flight between Budapest and Philadelphia a few weeks ago.
Noting that traffic at Liszt International has grown by nearly 20% between 2023 and 2025 to nearly 20 million people annually, Zsolt Tárkányi said the airport's infrastructure must be improved to keep up with demand. He said the government was committed to building a high-speed railway line linking the airport to downtown Budapest. Responding to a question, he said EU funding for such a project would be possible in the next budgetary cycle at the earliest.
Participating in the ribbon cutting ceremony in the foreground of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner passenger aircraft during the launch ceremony of Air Canada’s summer Budapest-Toronto direct flight at Liszt Ferenc International Airport were Rocky Lo, Managing Director of International Sales at Air Canada, Zsolt Tárkányi, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Hungarian Ministry of Transport and Investment, Francois Lafreniere, Canada's Ambassador to Hungary and Francois Berisot, CEO of Budapest Airport.
