As of June 18, EU and EEA citizens as well as Hungarians returning from these countries may enter Hungary without restrictions; UK citizens may only enter Hungary with separate permission.
Based on the regulation ending the ‘state of danger’, from June 18, citizens of the European Union as well as those of Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland are allowed to freely enter Hungary, without restrictions, and Hungarian citizens returning from the countries of the EU or the European Economic Area do not have to enter quarantine after crossing the Hungarian border either.
A bulletin issued by the airport management company points out that this does not apply to the United Kingdom; UK citizens may only enter Hungary with separate permission, and subject to individual assessment may be obliged to enter quarantine for two weeks, while Hungarian citizens returning from the UK are allowed to enter Hungary without any restriction.
Entry authorization without restriction is tied to citizenship, which means EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens may enter Hungary arriving from any country of the world. Besides, the scope of the regulation also includes close family members of citizens arriving from the countries listed above who are not citizens of these countries (for example, a Canadian wife of a Hungarian husband).
Based on the regulation, it is not the rules pertaining to travel in the Schengen zone which are re-introduced, as police now will be checking each person before crossing the border to see if they are citizens of any of the countries listed above, that is, they have to check all passports.
Health protection measures
Budapest Airport has introduced the measures included in international recommendations weeks ago, and in accordance with them, it is ensuring the protection of health of passengers and airport staff. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued common guidance (recommendations) regarding European aviation which has ensured the safe operation of airports during the pandemic. These measures are fully adopted by the operator of the airport of Budapest.
