Low-cost airliner Wizz Air has broken its previous passenger record in 2023, carrying more than 60.3 million passengers last year, an increase of around 32% compared to 2022; in Hungary, this represents 5.2 million passengers and a 29% increase compared to the previous year, the airline told MTI on Friday.
In 2023, Wizz Air launched nearly 100 new routes, expanded its fleet with 32 brand new Airbus A321neo aircraft and flew a total of 263 million kilometers, the statement said.
Last year, Wizz Air operated 99.31% of its scheduled flights, well above the industry average, and 99.68% of its Hungarian flights.
In addition to the increase in passenger numbers, the airline also set a record in reducing carbon emissions. Average emissions per passenger-kilometer have fallen to 51.5 grams, 6.8% less than in 2022.
They detail that to and from Hungary, Wizz Air flew 5.2 million passengers in 2023, including the Budapest and Debrecen bases. The airline operates 15 aircraft in the country and offers 70 destinations to 29 countries. Along with the popular Cairo, Sharm el-Sheikh, Copenhagen, Istanbul and Antalya, the airline launched almost a dozen new routes from Hungary last year.
In the statement, Wizz Air's communications manager Zsuzsa Trubek pointed out that Hungary is one of their most important markets, to which the airline remains committed this year.
Wizz Air currently operates a fleet of 196 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.
According to the statement, the company had revenues of EUR 3.896 billion in the financial year 2023, from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.
