More than 10 centimeters of snow covered Hungary's highest peak, Kékestető by Wednesday morning, the National Meteorological Service reported. It is the first snowfall in the second half of the year in this country.
At Kékestető, the temperature dropped below 0 degrees Celsius at dawn, followed by snowing all morning with varying intensity, and the situation was similar at other peaks of around 900 meters or above in the North Hungarian Mountains (NE Hungary). By 8 o'clock 9 centimeters of snow and by 11 o'clock 14 centimeters of snow piled up in the garden of the measuring station.
The National Meteorological Service also warned that people should not want to go and watch the first snow of the season at Kékestető, as there are reports of trees having fallen on the road leading up to the peak. In addition to the significant amount of precipitation and strong winds, another reason for this is that the trees still had their canopy above them, and thus, they could not bear the extra weight of wet, sticky snow.
