The heat has peaked and the national daily heat record has been broken in Hungary, the National Meteorological Service said this Thursday.
As they wrote, the maximum temperatures were between 33 and 40 degrees Celsius, with only a few stations measuring temperatures below 35 degrees.
Until now, the daily temperature record was 39.3 degrees Celsius on 8 July, set in Budakalász, just north of Budapest, in 2015.
This time it was almost a degree warmer: 40.2 degrees was measured in Adony in Fejér county.
Cecília Müller, the national chief medical officer, ordered her highest, third-degree heat alert, from Wednesday until midnight on Friday.
The National Meteorological Service warned earlier on Thursday that a cold front will arrive on Friday from the west with heavy thunderstorms. A second level warning has been issued for the whole country for Friday due to the risk of thunderstorms. The thunderstorms may be accompanied by gusty winds, heavy rain and large hail in several areas.
The forecast is for 16-24 degrees Celsius at dawn on Friday. Daytime highs will be between 25 and 37 degrees with lows in the northwest and highs in the southeast.
On Saturday and Sunday, temperatures could rise to a maximum of 32-33 degrees.
