One of the most popular and spectacular winter events, the Buso festival took place in Mohács, near the Serbian border this past week-end. According to estimates, some 80,000 people gathered in the town to attend the festival.
In the end-of-winter festival (that Hungarians refer to as 'busójárás'), about 900 "buso" - frightening-looking costumed people wearing wooden masks and big woolly cloaks - marched through the town after arriving in boats on the river Danube.
The Buso was included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009. The festivity was described as a general emblem of the city and a commemoration of the great events of its history.
This year, several diplomats also attended the event, including Ambassadors Colleen Bell of the United States, Jonathan Knott of the United Kingdom and Niclas Trouvé of Sweden.
