Hungarian Sociologist receives UNICEF award

Hungarian sociologist and academic Zsuzsa Ferge received on Tuesday the UNICEF Bouquet of Appreciation, awarded in recognition of Ferge's efforts to address child poverty in Hungary spanning several decades.

The award was granted to Zsuzsa Ferge by UNICEF's Hungarian Committee and it was handed over to her in Budapest.

Her books, articles and interviews over the years have helped child poverty become a topic for public discussion and an issue to deal with in politics, the committee told MTI in a statement. Ferge's research into social inequalities has played an important role in developing a national programme against child poverty, the statement added.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Roger Moore sent a message of appreciation to Ferge on the occasion.

The Bouquet of Appreciation was first donated to commemorate the 50th anniversary of UNICEF in 1996. On that occasion Queen Margaret of Denmark, Queen Fabiola of Belgium and the Princess of Thailand received this high honour. It is granted to persons and organisations in recognition of their efforts in advancing children issues.
