Democratic Party Leader in the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi led a bipartisan Delegation to Hungary to mark the 90th anniversary of U.S.-Hungarian diplomatic relations. During the visit, she met - among others - with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
In addition to her meeting with Prime Minister Orbán, Leader Pelosi presented to National Assembly Speaker László Kövér a copy of the treaty, signed by President Warren Harding establishing the U.S-Hungary relationship, as a gift to mark the anniversary of U.S.-Hungarian relations. The event was attended by the American Ambassador to Hungary, Eleni Tsakopoulos–Kounalakis.
Following the meeting with Hungarian politicians, Nancy Pelosi told Hungarian journalists that she shared the views of other American politicians who criticized several measures of the current Hungarian government and she raised her concerns regarding thr freedom of the press, the independence of the judiciary system and free elections. She welcomed that the Hungarian government is talking to the Venice Commission, for instance,
The delegation, which included five Congresswomen altogether, also met with civil society leaders about recent changes to Hungary’s system of checks and balances and their impact on democratic institutions.
