Wednesday evening saw the official opening of the 39th ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Szeged, southeast Hungary. The event that concludes this Sunday will have over a thousand competitors from 88 countries.
Formerly known as flatwater racing, the gathering of the world’s top kayak and canoe paddlers is in Szeged for the third time after 1998 and 2006.
As the President of the International Canoe Federation, Jose Perurena Lopez, proudly pointed out Wednesday afternoon in Szeged that “420 media and television crews are present at the World Championships, which shows an increasing interest in canoeing.”
The President of the Hungarian Canoe Federation, Etele Baráth emphasized that the special importance of the event is that 176 Olympic qualification quotas are decided here.
The venue of the Championships, the Maty-ér Regatta Course, is acknowledged to be one of the best courses in the world, and is a firm favorite among many of the canoeing elite.
