Hungary’s Áron Szilágyi won the men’s individual saber fencing competition to take the Hungarian delegation’s first gold medal at the 30th Summer Olympic Games in the British capital Sunday. The week-end also produced a silver and bronze for Hungary.
In the title bout, Szilágyi defeated Italy’s Diego Occhiuzzi 15-8, winning the men’s individual saber fencing title for Hungary after 20 years. The result cherishes the great saber traditions of Hungary for whom it was the 13th Olympic saber title. Formerly, Szilágyi’s coach was György Gerevich, the son of Aladár Gerevich, a seven(!)-time Olympic saber champion (between 1932 and 1960).
Also on Sunday, three times European champion Miklós Ungvári lost in the final of the 66-kilogram category of the judo competition to Lasha Shavdatuashvili of Georgia by yuko, thereby winning a silver medal for Hungary.
The first medal for Hungary came on Saturday when European silver and world bronze medalist Éva Csernoviczki won her bronze medal contest with ippon against 2009 world champion Tomoko Fukumi of Japan in the 48-kilogram category in women’s judo.
