Starting out from the City Park, thousands of people cycled through the Hungarian capital on Saturday afternoon, with the traditional parade the aim of which, according to organizers and participants, was campaigning for more and safer cycle lanes.
Following a tradition that started in 2004, participants stood up for cycling improvements. The event was secured by police officers and hundreds of volunteer organisers.
"This year, we want to see the bus lane on Üllői road transformed into a bike lane after the renovation of the underground line in the area is over, the cycle lane on downtown Kiskörút made safer, and the Chain Bridge made bikeable after the renovation," the organizer Hungarian Bicycle Club wrote.
As before, the event ended on Margaret Island, where the marchers lifted their bikes into the air. According to surveys by the Bicycle Club, more than 70% of Budapesters are open to cycling if conditions improve.
