The summer season at the Hungraian capital's Ferenc Liszt International Airport started with passenger traffic exceeding one million again in June 2022, with 1,208,169 passengers, according to the latest bulletin published by the facility's management company Budapest Airport.
The airport returned to 82% of the 2019 figures, meaning that the airport is approaching the pre-pandemic passenger numbers month by month. Despite the dynamic growth in passenger traffic, Budapest Airport is not experiencing the wide spread disruptions typical of most European airports and passenger handling is smooth and continuous. In June, an average of 15-20 flights were cancelled by airlines per week due to airline operational reasons, with 68% of flights departing on time or with a delay of maximum 30 minutes; the average duration of delays for departing flights was 30 minutes.
Currently, 108 cities and 119 airports are available from Ferenc Liszt International Airport, which are served by 30 airlines. The most popular destinations in June include classic summer destinations such as Barcelona, Antalya and Istanbul, but London, Amsterdam, Tel Aviv, Frankfurt and Paris remain firmly in the top 10.
The bulletin also says that Budapest Airport’s cargo traffic remains stable despite a decline in global air cargo volumes since April. In June, the volume of air cargo was 14,528 tons, which is 4.6% less than in June 2021, but 34.7% higher than in 2019. In the first six months of the year, the airport handled a total of 98,536 tons of air cargo, and if the trend continues, there is a good chance of reaching another milestone of 200,000 tons of cargo handled in a year.
