Local currencies used in parallel with the Hungarian Forint (HUF) are the tools of rural settlements to stimulate the local economy, keep money in place and keep jobs. Perhaps the most successful example of this today is the Bocskai Crown (BK) from Hajdúnánás.
The mayor of the northeastern Hungarian town, Tibor Szólláth told the business news site napi.hu that the Bocskai Crown (in Hungarian: Bocskai Korona) was first introduced as a local currency in 2012 in Hajdúnánás. Since each denomination has an expiration date, a new series was later introduced.
Compared to the first series, the denominations of the second series changed in that three other settlements joined the initiative in 2016: Balmazújváros, Vámospércs and Hajdúhadház. The denominations, both on the obverse and on the reverse, bear the signatures of the mayors as well as a symbol associated with each town.
There are currently approximately 120 BK acceptance places in Hajdúnánás, but the number of acceptance places in the four towns altogether exceeds 200.
The mayor adds that the Bocskai Korona was established as a local currency for economic purposes. We have an important role to play in stimulating the economy, keeping money in place and keeping jobs. It has also achieved its goal, as the acceptance points are present locally, the money can be spent locally and it does not leave the town.
The Bocskai Crown, issued with permission from the National Bank of Hungary, is freely convertible to HUF and vice versa. The local government pays bonuses in Bocskai Crown and more and more local enterprises provide their employees with this currency.
