Hungarian-born, legendary actress Zsa Zsa Gabor continues to show signs of improvement, after she was given her last rites in hospital on Aug 15. Her spokesperson says she is "still bed ridden but is eating a little, talking a little and sleeping a lot."
The Hollywood actress, once famed for her beauty and glamour, topped with her exaggerated Hungarian accent, nine marriages and a string of scandals, has recently battled a number of health problems. In 2002, she was injured when a car she was riding in, driven by her hairstylist, hit a lamp post, leaving her partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. In 2005, she suffered a stroke and a month ago she fell from her bed and broke her hip. She had a successful hip replacement surgery and was discharged from the hospital on August 11; however, two days later, Gabor returned to the hospital due to bleeding and pain. On Aug 15, she was in a critical condition after the removal of two blood clots, and a priest was called to the hospital to administer last rites. Declining to undergo any further surgery, she decided to spend her final days at home. Her publicist had previously described her state as being "in and out of consciousness”, but according to latest news, she is getting better.
Zsa Zsa Gabor was born in Budapest, probably in 1917 – her and her mother reported various date of births, so we can’t be sure – as Sári Gábor, middle daughter of Vilmos Gábor, a soldier, and Jolie Gábor. (The family was of Jewish descent; Jolie Gábor was a cousin of Annette Tilleman Lantos, the wife of California Congressman and Holocaust survivor Tom Lantos.) Moving to the U.S., her sisters, Magda and Eva also became actresses and socialites, and the three Gabor sisters made several appearances on radio and television shows in the 1950s and 1960s. Zsa Zsa Gabor alone has appeared in more than 30 movies, including "Moulin Rouge," "Lili" and "Touch of Evil," but she was rather at her best on talk shows, flirting with the hosts, calling everyone "dah-ling" and coming up with a number of bon mots, such as "I have never hated a man enough to give his diamonds back"; "I want a man who is kind and understanding. Is that too much to ask of a millionaire?" or "I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man I keep his house." Her nine husbands included a Turkish diplomat as a very first and today’s celebrity Paris Hilton’s great-grandfather, hotel magnate Conrad Hilton, from whom Zsa Zsa has a daughter, her only child, Constance Francesca Hilton. Husband Nr 9 is Prince Frederic von Anhalt, a prominent Los Angeles socialite, who is also running for Governor of California. They live together in their two-story Bel-Air home in California, a property they purchased from Elvis Presley.
