As of this Monday, the Hungarian Meteorological Service stations will provide data more frequently, every ten minutes, as part of the international data exchange, which will contribute to more reliable forecasts, the organization said on its website.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) data exchange system provides data from 140 stations every 10 minutes in real time from 11am on January 16, 2023. The automatic data provided includes pressure, temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation, ground temperature, cloud and radiation data.
This represents more parameters than the hourly data available so far, they noted.
The international exchange of these data can significantly contribute to a more reliable operation of ultra-short-term forecasting systems, contributing greatly to aviation meteorological and general alerts, and to the tracking of weather objects, they added. In addition, the wider availability of increasingly finer resolution measurement data will play an important role in data assimilation and post-processing within weather modelling.
The Hungarian Meteorological Service also reported that the World Meteorological Organization will launch the Global Baseline Observation Network (GBON) in January this year with the aim to improve the quality of weather, climate and hydrological services and products worldwide.
It was noted that there are currently still areas where the spatial coverage of meteorological measurements is incomplete or needs to be improved. The GBON aims to fill this gap by providing a uniform surface baseline data with sufficient spatial density, which will be incorporated into weather models to improve the quality of weather forecasts.
This development will also be a major support to the UN's ‘Early Warnings for All’ initiative, which aims to provide reliable warnings to all in the world within five years.
