Lidl Hungary has announced that from January 1, 2022 it uses 100% renewable electricity in its entire store network, logistics centers and office buildings. In addition, the number of its stores equipped with solar panels will be further increased.
Since the introduction of the ISO 50001 certification system, Lidl Hungary has implemented a number of measures to reduce the use of electricity, in particular in its stores and equipment.
As a result of its measures to reduce energy consumption, the company saved 9.1 million kWh of energy equivalent to the annual consumption of around 4,000 households between 2018 and 2020, preventing 3,100 tons of CO2 emissions.
By switching to green electricity, based on 2019 consumption data, an additional avoidance of more than 44,000 tons of CO2 emissions (calculated at 2019 CO2 equivalent) can be achieved, equivalent to CO2 emissions from the annual electricity consumption of nearly 53,000 households.
In order to make the switch to green energy, the discount chain has signed a contract with a supplier that guarantees to provide them only with energy produced and/or collected by solar, wind and hydroelectric power plants. In addition, as part of its energy efficiency drive to increase the share of energy from external sources in its operations, the company is gradually increasing the number of its buildings equipped with solar panels.
