The construction of BMW's new Debrecen plant is proceeding at full speed, and the plans are unchanged, the plant's CEO, Hans-Peter Kemser has told MTI.
In a statement, he wrote that no capacity had been reduced and there were no changes to the planned production of models.
Pre-series production is underway and series production will start next year, as planned. Pre-series production of vehicles has started in Debrecen with the aim of launching series production of the Neue Klasse all-electric Model X (SAV model) by the end of 2025, he added.
In the meantime, the Munich plant is preparing for production of the Neue Klasse sedan, as originally planned, the plant manager pointed out.
Hans-Peter Kemser said that, also according to the original plans, the Debrecen plant was designed for a maximum capacity of 150,000 units per year at full capacity. As with the start-up of any new model or new plant, production capacity will be gradually increased.
The foundation stone for the plant was laid on June 1, 2022. The BMW Group has begun construction of a full-scale car plant in Debrecen on 400 hectares of land, including a press shop, body shop, polishing shop and assembly hall. Shortly afterwards, in November, it was announced that BMW would also set up a battery assembly plant at its new factory in Debrecen, bringing the total value of the project to HUF 800 billion, with Hungarian taxpayers contributing a significant amount as a result of various government decisions.
