During this year's Formula One race weekend, hotels in the capital welcomed nearly 100,000 guests, with occupancy rates exceeding 86%, Visit Hungary told MTI on Wednesday, based on data from the National Tourism Data Center (NTAK).
Most foreign guests came from Great Britain, Poland and Germany for the 40th Hungarian Grand Prix, which took place between August 1 and 3.
According to the information, the 96,000 guests spent 180,000 guest nights in Budapest hotels, which is 17% and 15% more, respectively than during the previous year's race weekend. 91% of those arriving at the accommodations were foreigners, with international guest traffic exceeding last year's high base by 20%, they added.
Budapest hotels were almost fully booked, with lower-category hotels filled to capacity and three-star hotels reaching nearly 88% occupancy. Due to higher demand, average room rates doubled compared to the previous weekend.
After the British, most foreigners came from Poland and Germany, with the United States and Romania also in the lead, they noted.
In the towns and villages around the Hungaroring circuit – Mogyoród, Gödöllő, Kerepes, Veresegyház and Nagytarcsa – the number of guests increased three and a half times, and the number of nights they spent there increased sixfold compared to the previous weekend.
