Last month, the total installed capacity of solar power plants in Hungary exceeded 8,000 megawatts; the rise of green energy also contributed to the import ratio of electricity consumption remaining below 20% in the first half of this year, according to a social media post by the Ministry of Energy (EM) quoted by MTI on Tuesday.
The ministry emphasized that Hungary is striving to become a leader in green energy production and storage. Last year, Hungary accounted for the largest share of solar energy in electricity production in the world, at 25%. According to annual statistics released recently by the International Renewable Energy Agency, between 2015 and 2024, Hungary's installed renewable capacity grew at the fastest rate in Europe, increasing more than eightfold.
Thanks to this enormous green energy capacity, the import balance in the first half of 2025 was less than 20% of gross electricity turnover, compared to nearly 25% in the same period last year, according to the EM.
They added that the figures for the second quarter of this year were particularly favorable, with the import share at only 10% in April, 13.5% in May, and 13.7% in June. Mavir thus showed a better ratio than last year's best value, 15.4% in April, in three months.
Thanks to the surge in green energy production capacity, the country is increasingly producing exportable quantities of electricity in addition to meeting domestic demand. The government has already supported families and businesses in the establishment of energy storage facilities with a total of HUF 180 billion in several tenders. The surplus produced during the peak production period in the south can be set aside for the early evening peak consumption period using modern equipment, making the use of clean energy sources even more efficient and profitable, the ministry pointed out.
The Jedlik Ányos Energy Program will soon launch a new corporate tender to encourage the installation of industrial energy storage facilities with a budget of HUF 50 billion, the EM announced in its post.
