One of Hungary’s mobile communications service providers, Yettel is spending HUF tens of billions to modernize its mobile network nationwide, the development could almost triple the capacity of the network, making it faster and more reliable in many respects, the company told the state news agency MTI.
The development of the core network will enable the introduction of new services and can also increase the capacity of the 4G network, which already has nationwide coverage, and pave the way for 5G developments, it said.
The operator is about halfway through the overall network modernization process, with investment having started last year. Despite the current economic environment, Yettel has not changed its technical development plans and is committed to implementing the full modernization, they added.
It is not only the number of users, i.e. the number of connected devices, that is constantly increasing, but also the need to prepare for what people (and devices and machines) will want to use the network for, they explained.
They said that outdoor coverage of the residential 4G network is now over 99%.
The modernization not only means the roll-out of 5G, but also further enhances the 4G experience already available to the masses: in areas with modernized core networks and radio units, the 4G capacity available until then has increased by up to 2.5-3 times.
In many locations, the modernization will bring 5G, with the right user equipment providing download speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Yettel already has more than 400 base stations nationwide with such 5G services available, and this number is steadily increasing. This provides the basis for 5G-based so-called Fixed Wireless Access services for home and office.
Yettel plans to complete the network development in 2023. Meanwhile, the phasing out of 3G is taking place in parallel, with the 900 MHz frequency – the frequency that provides wide area coverage – already being phased out nationwide.
