As a result of their joint campaign last fall, Tesco and Nestlé have donated HUF 16 million to the Hungarian Food Bank Association, the latter informed MTI on Wednesday.
As part of the charity campaign announced in the fall of 2023, Nestlé donated 1% of the value of the products sold in Tesco stores to charity, while Tesco doubled the amount. In total, more than HUF 15.5 million was raised to feed the needy.
With the HUF 16 million donation, the Hungarian Food Bank Association will be able to deliver more than 170,000 food parcels to those in need. These parcels typically contain near-expiry, faulty but high-quality products, perfectly suitable for consumption, which the organization collects daily from supermarkets and food producers.
"Many times, a family may only need the Food Bank's help for a temporary period, but then it is the only sure point in a crisis situation. The joint donation from Tesco and Nestlé provides support for many such situations," the statement quotes Balázs Cseh, president of the Food Bank, as saying.
Tesco and Nestlé have been strategic partners of the Food Bank for years in the fight against food waste. Currently, around 170 Tesco stores are involved in daily food rescue operations with the association, with the aim of reducing food surplus and supporting those in need, the statement said.
