The biotechnology and pharmaceutical company Roche and the University of Szeged (SZTE) have agreed to support research, development, and educational activities and to implement joint innovation projects. The agreement was signed on Monday during the university's Innovation Day in the southeastern Hungarian city of Szeged.
Judit Fendler, Chancellor of SZTE, said that in addition to existing collaborations, Roche Hungary and the university will launch joint research and development projects in the fields of neurology, immunology, oncology, cardiology, diabetology, rare diseases, ophthalmology, laboratory medicine, and pathology.
The focus of the cooperation will be on 21st-century digital healthcare solutions, healthcare organization, improving doctor-patient communication, prevention, and public education, the chancellor said.
Peter Ahnesorg, CEO of Roche Hungary's pharmaceutical division, said that the agreement is not just a formality, but a genuine collaboration between one of the global leaders in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry and a renowned research university, an example of how the academic and industrial spheres can work together.
In addition to launching joint research and development projects, the agreement also covers the application of digital solutions in medicine, the development of personalized therapies, and early clinical trials. This will make innovative therapies available to Hungarian patients sooner, the expert emphasized.
The future of healthcare lies in the hands of students and future researchers, which is why Roche supports resident and doctoral training programs at the university, said Peter Ahnesorg.
Founded in 1896, Basel-based Roche, listed on the Zurich Stock Exchange, is one of the world's largest biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.
