László Barna Benedek, a senior student of the Szent István High School in Budapest, representing Hungary, has been awarded a Certificate of Honorable Mention at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world science competition in Dallas, Texas in the United States.
The world’s most outstanding young scientists, engineers and researchers had qualified for this competition, with nearly 1,700 participants representing 49 U.S. states and 64 countries around the world.
László Barna Benedek received the special prize from the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) for his project “Developing a Motorized UV Illuminator Device for Photochemical Ligand-Binding.” The award includes a one-year free student membership to the INCOSE, and free virtual admission to the 2022 International Symposium of the INCOSE.
According to a statement by the Hungarian Association for Innovation (MISZ), the Hungarian contestant was the first prize winner of the 31st National Youth Science and Innovation Competition organized by MISZ, presenting his skills to the jury and the public in the engineering technology category. The UV-Covbel is a medical device used for the labelling of proteins, a so-called ligand-based photochemical labelling. The protein is illuminated by the UV LED, creating a label on the protein that lasts for a long time and can be studied for a long time.
