In August 2025, nearly 2.8 million guests spent 7.3 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments in Hungary, the country's Central Statistical Office (KSH) reports.
Tourist arrivals were up by 5.2% and tourism nights by 3.1% in number compared to a year earlier. In January-August 2025, the number of domestic and international guests arriving to tourist accommodation establishments was 1.9% and 11% higher than in the same period of the previous year.
In August 2025:
Overall, the number of tourist arrivals increased by 5.2% and that of tourism nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments by 3.1%. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of arrivals expanded by 7.9% and that of tourism nights by 4.6% compared to August 2024. 65% of guests arrived at commercial accommodation establishments, where their number grew by 5.3% from the previous year. Private and other accommodation establishments recorded 4.8% more tourist arrivals than a year earlier.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals and of domestic tourism nights were 1.0% higher and 1.0% lower respectively than in the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic arrivals grew by 0.3% and that of domestic tourism nights fell by 2.6% compared to August 2024. The nearly 1.5 million domestic guests spent 3.9 million tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 946,000 tourist arrivals and 2.4 million tourism nights.
Hotels received 63% of the latter arrivals, where their number grew by 4.0% compared to a year earlier. The number of domestic tourist arrivals in private and other accommodation was 2.0% lower than in August 2024. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of domestic arrivals increased the most in the Győr and Pannonhalma tourism area (by 6.5%), while it decreased most in the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza tourism area (by 6.0%). The number of domestic arrivals to tourist accommodation establishments was 18% higher in Budapest and 2.2% lower at Lake Balaton.
The number of international tourist arrivals was up by 10% and that of international tourism nights by 8.4% compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of international arrivals grew by 12% and that of international tourism nights by 10% compared to August 2024. The 1.3 million international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent nearly 3.4 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 865,000 tourist arrivals and 2.1 million tourism nights.
Hotels received 71% of the latter arrivals, where their number was 7.0% higher than a year earlier. The number of foreign tourist arrivals in private and other accommodation establishments was 14% higher than in August 2024. Compared to the same month last year, the number of international arrivals increased in all tourism regions, most significantly (by 22%) in Greater Budapest and (by 19%) in the Szeged region. The number of international arrivals to tourist accommodation was 8.5% higher in Budapest and 12% higher at Lake Balaton.
A total of 38,583 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 3,009 commercial and 35,574 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.
Of commercial accommodation establishments, 1,022 hotels and 1,178 boarding houses were open for part or all of August.
The total gross sales revenue of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to HUF 160.9 billion, 14% more at current prices than a year earlier.
Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend around HUF 7.6 billion, 3.5% more at current prices compared to the same month of the previous year, at tourist accommodation establishments.
In January-August 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year:
Tourist accommodation establishments recorded a total of nearly 13.5 million tourist arrivals, up 6.2%.
The number of domestic and international tourist arrivals was up by 1.9% and 11% respectively (6.8 million and 6.6 million) in tourist accommodation establishments.
