85% of the people eligible to vote in Hungary are in favor of the country's European union membership, according to a new survey conducted by the Medián Institute for Public Opinion and Market Research.
The EU's popularity among opposition voters is 94% and 77% of even those favoring the governing parties support the country's EU membership, while the European Union's popularity among undecided voters is 86%.
Since 2004, a lasting majority of more than 70% has supported Hungary's membership in the European Union. This majority declined somewhat in the fall of 2011, melting to an average of two-thirds, and then reaching or exceeding 70% again after 2014. In 2018, the popularity figure fluctuated around 80% throughout the year before reaching, in January 2019, an unprecedented rate of 85%. That many people said that they "fully" or "rather" supported Hungary's membership of the European Union.
Now that the Hungarian government is in more intense conflict with the EU than ever before and governmental attacks on EU institutions have become commonplace, the Hungarian public is again in favor of the country's EU membership with a majority of more than four-fifths.
